In a world that often glorifies hyper-independence and self-reliance, many Black women find themselves bearing the weight of everything—family, work, relationships, and even the pressure to "have it all together." While independence is admirable, it’s not the only way. Wellness, in its truest form, is not just a solitary journey. It thrives when it’s shared, nurtured, and cultivated within a collective community.

Collective wellness is about healing and growth in community. It challenges the outdated notion that self-care has to be a solo endeavour, reminding us that shared spaces can amplify our well-being. For Black women, these spaces are not just helpful—they’re essential.
We’ve all felt it: the quiet sense of belonging that comes from sitting in a room full of people who just get it. A knowing glance. A shared laugh. The unspoken understanding that you are seen, heard, and held without judgment. It’s these very moments that are the foundation of collective wellness.
It’s no secret that Black women regularly face unique stressors, from navigating microaggressions in the workplace to confronting systemic inequities in healthcare or fighting for representation across multiple industries. Amid these challenges, the need for spaces where we can truly exhale is greater than ever, a space where we can break through the isolation through sisterhood.
Loneliness is one of the most pervasive issues impacting mental health today. Despite being more connected than ever through technology and social media, many of us feel isolated—especially as adults. Sisterhoods like Babes Seeking Balance offer an antidote to that isolation.

The Babes Seeking Balance community focuses on creating intentional spaces where women can gather, reconnect, and simply be. These spaces are about more than socializing; they’re about building trust, creating accountability, and celebrating growth. Whether it’s through shared activities and hobbies or deep conversations, the act of coming together becomes a form of healing in itself.
When we connect with others who share similar experiences, we’re reminded that we don’t have to carry everything alone. We can lean on each other, share the load, and offer a shoulder when it’s needed most.
Studies have reflected the benefits of cultivating strong social connections can do, including:
Reduced Stress: Being part of a supportive network can lower cortisol levels and improve emotional resilience.
Improved Mental Health: Regular social interactions help combat feelings of depression and anxiety.
Enhanced Emotional Regulation: Talking through challenges with others can help process emotions more effectively.
But beyond the science, there’s something deeply personal about finding your people—those who celebrate your wins, uplift you in your struggles, and remind you of your unquantifiable worth.
As we approach International Women's Day, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we can intentionally create more of these moments of connection. That’s exactly what we aim to do at Babes Seeking Balance - A community for Black women embracing balance, connection and rest through wellness events and intentional spaces to thrive together.
Our events are about embracing ease, joy, and togetherness. Think laughter, meaningful conversations, and moments of relaxation that remind you that wellness can—and should—feel good. It’s not about achieving perfection or checking another thing off your to-do list. It’s about pouring into yourself by pouring into your community.
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, drained, or disconnected, this is your sign to show up for yourself. Allow this to be an investment in your mental and emotional health, a gift to your future self, who will thank you for taking this time to rest, connect, and recharge.
Whether you’re attending our events or creating your own moments of connection, here are three ways to foster collective wellness in your life:
Find Your People: Seek out spaces and communities that align with your values and support your goals. This could be a wellness group, a book club, or even a virtual community.
Show Up Consistently: The magic of sisterhood happens when we show up for each other—not just in the good times but also when it’s hard. Consistency builds trust and deepens connections.
Be Vulnerable: Healing happens when we’re open about what we need. Share your feelings, celebrate your wins, and lean on others when you need support.
In a society that often demands too much of us, creating and maintaining spaces of ease is a revolutionary act. Collective wellness is about redefining what it means to care for ourselves—not as isolated individuals but as part of something bigger.
As you move through this season, I encourage you to pause and ask: How can I lean into community? How can I create space for joy and connection in my life?
And if you’re in the Toronto area, we hope you’ll join the BSB community. Together, we’re building something beautiful—a reminder that we’re stronger, healthier, and happier when we do this work side by side.
