A LETTER FROM OUR  Founder AND Editor-In-Chief MONIQUE-TAYLOR SHUI

When I tell people about byHer and my role as the founder and editor, I'm often asked about the origin of my decision to launch a magazine dedicated to Black women in Canada. Well, it goes back to when I was growing up in the 90s. My sources of inspiration then were primarily rooted in American culture – from iconic TV shows like The Cosby Show, The Fresh Prince, and A Different World, to influential publications such as Vibe Magazine, Hype Hair, and Word Up!. The Black Canadian experience, and I should also mention my experience with being raised by Caribbean parents, was noticeably absent from these narratives.

Many moons later, reflecting on the privilege I’ve had to connect with remarkable women in various spaces during my career, I found myself one late night (when most ideas pop into my head) wondering about the absence of a lifestyle magazine specifically tailored to Black women in Canada. A quick online search confirmed the stark reality – there was nothing currently in the market catering to the diverse experiences of Black women in our country. It was in that moment the idea of byHER was conceived.

I thought back to when I was growing up and what examples, and the lack thereof, I had where I saw women that looked like me in various spaces. Then, I thought of my daughters, and I was further fueled to commit to creating a space for our girls and young women, ensuring they see themselves reflected in the diverse experiences within our country.

I am also a firm believer of honouring our past. With byHER, I aim to pay homage to the trailblazing Black Canadian women who laid the foundation for my generation and the magazine also serves as a platform to spotlight the achievements and strides made by Black women in today's world.

byHER is a source of joy and inspiration and with your support, I want to see it become a platform that uplifts and creates an empowering community of Black women.

Thank you for taking the time to be here. Welcome to byHER!
