Growing up in Canada in the 90s, my sources of inspiration were rooted almost entirely in American culture — from The Cosby Show and A Different World to Vibe Magazine and Hype Hair. The Black Canadian experience was noticeably absent from those narratives, and that absence stayed with me.

Over the years I’ve had the privilege of connecting with remarkable women across many spaces. I asked myself — why isn’t there a lifestyle magazine for Black women in Canada? A quick search confirmed it didn’t exist and In that moment, byHER was born.

I thought about my daughters, and I was fuelled to build a space where our girls could see themselves reflected in the diverse experiences of this country. byHER exists to celebrate Black women in Canada — our stories, our culture, our joy — while honouring the trailblazers who came before us.

We are now reimagining byHER for a new era. More intentional, more community-driven, and built around the conversations that matter most to us.
